Common Language Description

A duplex scan of lower extremity arteries or arterial bypass grafts, designated by CPT® Code 93926, is a specialized vascular ultrasound procedure aimed at assessing the condition of the arteries in the lower limbs or the status of any arterial bypass grafts. This procedure employs a combination of B-mode imaging and Doppler ultrasound techniques to provide a comprehensive evaluation of blood flow and arterial structure. During the examination, a clear gel is applied to the skin over the area of interest to facilitate the transmission of sound waves. A B-mode transducer is then placed on the skin, generating real-time images of the arteries or grafts. Concurrently, a Doppler probe integrated within the B-mode transducer captures the dynamics of blood flow, including its direction and velocity. The B-mode component utilizes ultrasonic sound waves that penetrate the skin and reflect off the arterial walls, while the Doppler component detects sound waves that bounce off moving blood cells. The resulting data is processed by an amplifier, converting the sound waves into audible signals, with variations in pitch indicating changes in blood flow, such as narrowing or complete obstruction of a vessel. Additionally, the computer system transforms these sound waves into color-coded images that visually represent blood flow speed and direction, as well as any potential blockages. Spectral Doppler analysis further enhances the assessment by providing detailed information regarding the anatomy and hemodynamic function of the arteries, including the detection of plaque formation. Following the procedure, the physician interprets the findings from the duplex scan and documents the results in a written report. For a complete bilateral study, the appropriate code to use is 93925, while CPT® Code 93926 is specifically designated for unilateral or limited studies.
