The CPT® Code 94618 refers to a specific type of pulmonary stress testing, commonly known as the 6-minute walk test. This test is designed to evaluate the exercise capacity of individuals who exhibit moderate to severe respiratory symptoms. The primary purpose of this assessment is to determine the functional status of the patient and the extent of any impairment they may be experiencing due to their respiratory condition. During the test, various physiological parameters are measured, including heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation levels, both before and during the exercise. The procedure involves the patient walking at their own pace along a designated corridor, typically measuring 30 meters (or 100 feet), for a duration of six minutes. This self-paced walking allows for a realistic assessment of the patient's endurance and response to physical exertion. Throughout the test, supplemental oxygen may be provided if necessary, based on the patient's oxygen saturation levels. After the completion of the walk, the recorded measurements are analyzed to evaluate the patient's response to exercise, the effectiveness of any administered medications such as inhaled bronchodilators or corticosteroids, and to identify any potential low oxygen levels that may require further intervention.
