The CPT® Code 95707 refers to a specific type of electroencephalogram (EEG) procedure that is performed without video recording. This procedure involves a continuous recording of brain wave activity over a duration of 2 to 12 hours. The primary purpose of this long-term EEG is to capture and analyze the electrical activity of the brain, which is crucial for diagnosing various neurological conditions, particularly seizure disorders. The time for this procedure is measured from the moment the actual recording begins and continues for the entire duration of the recording process.
This extended EEG service is particularly beneficial for identifying the type and location of seizures, monitoring the effectiveness of ongoing treatment, and distinguishing between seizure disorders and other neurological abnormalities. Additionally, it can be instrumental in evaluating whether a patient’s epilepsy may be amenable to surgical intervention. In cases involving seriously ill patients, this EEG can also serve as a screening tool for detecting new or adverse neurological changes that may arise during their treatment.
The technical aspects of this procedure are comprehensive and include several critical steps. An EEG technologist is responsible for uploading the data generated by the EEG equipment, reviewing the raw data, and making necessary annotations and edits to highlight recognized events, whether they are generated by the patient or detected by the machine. Furthermore, the reviewed data is stored or archived for subsequent evaluation by a physician or other qualified personnel. A written report is then generated, documenting the technologist's review of the data, including any technical interventions that were performed during the monitoring period.
For cases where the EEG is performed without continuous monitoring, different CPT codes are applicable, such as 95705 for 2-12 hours and 95708 for 12-26 hours. In instances where intermittent monitoring and maintenance are provided, codes 95706 and 95709 are used. However, for the continuous, real-time monitoring and maintenance described by CPT® Code 95707, it is essential to document the monitoring process, event recognition, and any notifications made to the physician as per their instructions throughout the entire recording period.
