Common Language Description

Polysomnography is a comprehensive sleep study that is conducted to assess various sleep disorders in patients, particularly those younger than 6 years old. This procedure involves sleep staging, which is the classification of different sleep phases, and is performed by a trained sleep technologist. The primary goal of polysomnography is to evaluate and diagnose a range of sleep-related issues, including but not limited to sleep apnea, narcolepsy, insomnia, sleepwalking, restless leg syndrome, and other periodic movements that may occur during sleep. The process of sleep staging utilizes several monitoring techniques, including electroencephalography (EEG), which records brain activity through electrodes placed on the scalp, electro-oculography (EOG) to track eye movements, and electromyography (EMG) to measure muscle tone, particularly under the chin. In addition to these core measurements, polysomnography captures four or more additional parameters that provide a comprehensive view of the patient's sleep state. These parameters may include heart rate and rhythm, airflow, respiratory effort, gas exchange metrics through oximetry or other methods, muscle activity, extended EEG monitoring, and other relevant factors such as snoring and body position. The data collected during the study is meticulously analyzed by a physician, who then provides a detailed written interpretation of the results. This thorough evaluation is essential for determining the appropriate treatment and management strategies for the patient's sleep disorder. It is important to note that specific coding is used to differentiate between various types of polysomnography based on the parameters measured and the interventions performed, such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy or bi-level ventilation.
