Chiropractic manipulative treatment (CMT) is a therapeutic approach that involves the application of controlled, sudden force and twisting movements to the spine and extraspinal regions. The primary goal of CMT is to relieve pressure on the nervous system, reduce inflammation, and enhance overall nerve function. This treatment modality is often utilized to address various musculoskeletal conditions, particularly those affecting the back and neck. CMT can be performed as a standalone intervention or in conjunction with other therapeutic strategies, including exercise regimens, lifestyle modifications, nutritional counseling, trigger point massage, electrical muscle stimulation, and ultrasound therapy. Patients suffering from a range of symptoms such as back pain, neck pain, headaches, fibromyalgia, sciatica, myofascial pain, spinal stenosis, and chest wall discomfort may experience symptom relief through the application of CMT. The coding system for CMT is structured to reflect the number of spinal regions treated: CPT® Code 98940 is designated for treatment involving 1-2 regions, CPT® Code 98941 is applicable for 3-4 regions, and CPT® Code 98942 is used for treatment involving 5 regions. Additionally, CPT® Code 98943 is assigned for CMT performed in 1 or more extraspinal regions.
