Under the direction of the Compliance Manager, the Medical Coding Auditor conducts medical record audits to ensure documentation meets required standards and regulations. Maintains up-to-date knowledge on standards set by JCAHO, Medicare, Medicaid, and others. Reviews medical records for coding accuracy and completeness and prepares audit reports highlighting deficiencies and suggesting solutions.
Responsibilities include analyzing medical records, verifying documentation supports diagnoses and procedures, auditing clinical documentation, ensuring compliance with coding policies, and serving as a resource and consultant for coding staff. Investigates coding issues, provides coding education, reviews claims to determine payment decisions, uses Correct Coding Initiatives as guidance, and applies a strong understanding of physiology, medical terms, and anatomy. Assigns CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, and DRG codes to ensure compliance and reimbursement.
Qualifications include an Associate's degree or equivalent (Bachelor of Science preferred), at least three years of medical coding experience, including two years in a mental health coding environment, and certification in medical coding with preferred APPC or AHIMA credentials.
Knowledge areas include state and federal healthcare regulations, Texas Administrative Code, medical billing and coding guidelines, accounting principles, revenue cycle processes, insurance regulations, strong attention to detail, multitasking, customer service, communication skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office and Electronic Health Records.
