Medical Billing/Coding Specialist

Gastro Florida is the largest gastroenterology group in Tampa Bay with over 65 providers and 25+ locations offering a range of services including GI screening and treatment, colon cancer prevention, non-surgical cancer intervention, IBD infusions and therapy, nutrition and weight loss services, monitoring between visits, pharmacy and pathology services, and clinical research.

The Medical Billing/Coding Specialist will work in the Central Business Office (CBO) handling collections of insurance claims, A/R reports, insurance follow up, denials, appeals, and researching unpaid balances under direction of the Billing Manager.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Code, prepare, and submit clean claims to insurance companies via electronic and paper submissions
  • Monitor insurance claims through reports and contact insurers for timely resolution
  • Identify and correct coding/billing errors from EOBs
  • Identify issues with payors and resolve recoup problems
  • Update patient account demographics and document actions in system
  • Identify and escalate problem accounts
  • Work with patients and guarantors to collect outstanding payments
  • Research and obtain necessary provider/office information
  • Sort and file correspondence
  • Verify patient insurance eligibility
  • Accurately calculate and collect out-of-pocket patient expenses
  • Maintain CPC, CGIC, or similar coding certifications (CPC preferred)

Other duties (~10%): overtime as needed including evenings/weekends, attend meetings and training, maintain HIPAA confidentiality.

Salary: $23.00 - $27.00 per hour

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Experience in a fast-paced medical billing environment handling high volume workloads
  • Coding certification such as CPC or CGIC preferred
  • Strong attention to detail and conscientious work ethic
  • Ability to integrate quickly with minimal training
  • Understanding of insurance claims processes, denials, appeals, and collections
  • HIPAA compliance and patient confidentiality knowledge
