Medical Biller / Surgery Scheduler

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and schedule surgical procedures with hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs), and surgical teams
  • Obtain prior authorizations and verify insurance eligibility for all surgical cases
  • Communicate surgery details, pre-op instructions, and logistics clearly to patients, families, and facility staff
  • Submit clean claims and follow up on outstanding accounts receivable
  • Process Explanations of Benefits (EOBs), manage denials, and file appeals as needed
  • Ensure accurate coding compliance (CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS) for orthopaedic and surgical procedures
  • Post payments, reconcile accounts, and generate billing reports
  • Coordinate with referring physicians and facilities regarding scheduling and patient records
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of payer requirements, fee schedules, and billing regulations
  • Support patients with billing questions, payment plans, and financial assistance inquiries
Requirements & Qualifications
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in surgery scheduling and/or medical billing; orthopaedic or surgical specialty experience strongly preferred
  • Experience with athenahealth EHR (primary practice management system)
  • Proficiency in CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS medical coding
  • Thorough understanding of insurance verification, prior authorizations, and referral processes
  • Working knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, managed care, and commercial payer guidelines
  • Familiarity with CMS billing regulations and HIPAA compliance requirements
  • Experience with claim submission, denial management, and appeals processes
  • Ability to read and interpret EOBs and remittance advices
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple cases and deadlines simultaneously
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree in healthcare administration or related field preferred
  • Medical billing certification (CPC, CPB, or CBCS) a plus
  • Spanish speaker preferred
