Medical Billing and Coding Training Program

OCHIN

This is a grant-funded training program focused on Medical Billing and Coding, designed to introduce participants to health insurance, healthcare settings, coding, and reimbursement. Trainees learn about the CPT®, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS Level II codebooks, health insurance industry, legal and regulatory issues, and medical billing procedures.

The program prepares students to take certification exams from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) for Certified Professional Biller (CPB) and Certified Professional Coder (CPC).

The program consists of three phases:

  • Online classroom training (approx. 20 weeks)
  • Online internship (approx. 9 weeks)
  • Externship (approx. 10 weeks)

Participants must commit to 40 hours per week during standard business hours for approximately 39-44 weeks. The program is remote with online and remote hands-on training.

Eligibility includes being 18 or older, having a high school diploma or GED, U.S. citizenship or permanent residency, ability to pass a background check, and familiarity with Microsoft Office. Bilingual Spanish speakers are preferred but not required.

Benefits include learning comprehensive medical billing and coding with specifics related to federally qualified health centers (FQHCs), certification preparation, a stipend totaling $31,200 distributed over the program duration, monthly health marketplace reimbursement up to $600, and internet stipend.

The role of Medical Biller and Coder Specialist involves providing healthcare billing and coding services, identifying high-risk trends, denial management, optimizing revenue, coding accuracy, and supporting revenue cycle performance measures. Key duties involve coding, abstracting clinical data, claim preparation, research for denied claims, account receivable management, and customer service in compliance with HIPAA.

OCHIN is an equal-opportunity educational provider committed to diversity, inclusion, and health and safety protocols including COVID-19 vaccination and immunization requirements for participants.
