The Hampton Roads Community Health Center is seeking Patient Financial Services Assistants at locations in Portsmouth and Norfolk, VA. Under general supervision, this role supports scheduling, patient registration, billing, patient outreach, and coding.
Primary responsibilities include greeting patients, managing appointments, collecting and verifying insurance information, assisting with Health Insurance Marketplace enrollment and Medicaid redetermination, managing accounts receivable, reviewing medical documentation for coding accuracy (CPT, ICD-9, ICD-10), facilitating communication among providers and patients, patient education, and administrative support activities.
Education and experience levels vary from entry to lead, with requirements ranging from high school diploma with 6 months plus experience to associate degree and 5+ years experience plus supervisory duties. Certified Coding credentials (CCA, CCS, CPC, CBCS) are desirable.
The position requires knowledge of healthcare management, HIPAA, customer service, healthcare systems, and computer proficiency in word processing and spreadsheets.

- High school diploma with 6 months+ experience in patient scheduling, medical/dental billing, coding procedures, patient outreach, and insurance verification for Level I.
- Level II requires 3 to 5 years of similar experience.
- Lead level requires an associate degree in Business or Health Care Administration, 5 to 8 years of relevant experience, plus 1 to 2 years supervisory experience.
- Desirable certifications: Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Billing & Coding Specialist (CBCS).
- Knowledge of healthcare management, HIPAA, patient-focused healthcare services, and customer service.
- Computer skills including word processing and spreadsheet software.
