Under the supervision of the Business Office Supervisor and Practice Manager, responsible for handling portions of professional billing, payment posting, research and follow up of unpaid claims including refunds. Promotes a favorable image of the practice to physicians, patients, insurance companies, and the general public.
Work well with others, follow the chain of command, participate in staff meetings and all coding/billing related educational activities.
Duties include identifying and reporting correct code selection from physician documentation, adding specific data elements to claims such as modifiers, payer-specific information, CPT, and ICD-10 codes, research and verify accuracy of billing data, understand and interpret the Correct Coding Initiative (CCI), reduce denials by correct use of modifiers and linking diagnosis codes with services.
Knowledge of in and out of network insurances, insurance verification, patient responsibility and prior authorization processes. Communicate effectively with providers and others regarding missing information to ensure proper coding.
Interpret EOBs, post payments, adjust accounts, manage account status and reimbursement trends, maintain appeal/denials, process charge/payment batches, track and follow up information requests.
Provide exceptional customer service; answer calls promptly; proactively resolve issues; increase revenue by collecting payments on outstanding accounts, establish payment plans, send delinquent accounts to collections, mail patient collection letters, and respond to billing questions.
Handle patient and insurance refunds, balance and reconcile month end reports, cross train in other Business Office areas, attend coding/billing educational activities, maintain regular attendance, and perform other duties as assigned.
High School Diploma or GED required. Minimum two (2) years of experience in a medical billing office required. Gastroenterology experience helpful but not required. Must speak and understand English. Strong ethical and moral character references required. Must pass background check and urine drug screen. Must be authorized to work in the United States.
Skills needed include problem solving, customer service, interpersonal skills, oral and written communication, strong organizational skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel), 10-Key and strong math skills, and ability to work in a high-volume environment.
