Medical Billing (Laboratory) duties include checking eligibility and benefits verification for procedures, preparing, reviewing, and transmitting claims using billing software (both electronic and paper), following up on unpaid claims within the standard billing cycle, researching and appealing denied claims, verifying insurance payments for accuracy, communicating with insurance companies regarding discrepancies, answering patient or insurance inquiries, updating spreadsheets, and running collection reports.
Additional responsibilities include working with payors to resolve remittance errors and claim rejections, handling billing-related calls from patients and physicians promptly, submitting claims and appeals via calls and portals, researching insurance plan-specific claim and appeal process updates, and establishing ongoing contacts within insurance plans.
Preferred experience requires 1-2 years in medical billing within the healthcare industry, particularly with billing guidelines related to proprietary laboratory services using unlisted miscellaneous CPT codes. Basic medical terminology knowledge is also needed.
