Alaska Retinal Consultants is seeking a self-motivated individual to join our team as a full-time Medical Biller. This is an on-site position.
Primary duties include collecting and entering claim information, posting insurance and managing patient accounts, submitting claims and following up with insurance carriers on unpaid or rejected claims, and answering patient inquiries on account status and charges.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities required:
- Enter information necessary for insurance claims such as patient, insurance ID, diagnosis and treatment codes and modifiers, and provider information, ensuring claim information is complete and accurate.
- Submit insurance claims electronically or via paper CMS-1500 form.
- Answer patient questions regarding copays, deductibles, write-offs, and resolve complaints or explain coverage.
- Follow up on unpaid or rejected claims and resubmit as needed.
- Prepare appeal letters to insurance carriers.
- Prepare patient statements for charges not covered by insurance.
- Work with patients to establish payment plans for past due accounts.
- Provide information to collection agencies for delinquent accounts.
- Post insurance and patient payments using medical claim billing software.
- Perform soft collections, contacting patients as needed.
- Submit secondary claims when applicable.
- Follow HIPAA guidelines in handling patient information.
- Generate insurance or patient aging reports.
- Understand managed care authorizations and limits to coverage.
- Verify patient benefits eligibility and coverage.
- Look up ICD-10 diagnosis and CPT treatment codes using online or traditional references.
Other attributes include teamwork, knowledge of insurance and reimbursement processes, good math and typing skills, good judgment and discretion, proficiency with computers and office equipment, excellent verbal and written communication skills, understanding of ICD-10 and CPT codes, good telephone and patient relations skills, detail orientation, and ability to prioritize work.
Ideal candidate is dependable, adaptable/flexible, and detail-oriented.
Education preference: Associate degree.
Experience required: 2 years in medical billing, 2 years experience with NextGen PM systems.
