The Accounts Receivable Specialist (ARS) records charges and payments to client accounts and maintains accounts receivable records, working with third-party agencies on unpaid and/or denied claims. The specialist completes physical and psychiatric billing and regularly meets with clients to review insurance coverage and other financial information.
Responsibilities include submitting and resubmitting HCFAs to third-party payer sources, using the Nebraska Medicaid Electronic System (NMES) for client coverage verification, communicating about payer performance and system issues, researching and resolving claim denials or unpaid claims, and conducting client financial interviews. The ARS also documents claim status clearly, develops relationships with provider offices and internally across BHS, assists with credentialing tasks, collection calls, journal entries via the EHR system, special projects, and provides backup coverage for team members.
Requirements include successful background checks and valid driver's license, minimum age of 21, two years continuous sobriety if in substance abuse recovery, compliance with agency policies, and willingness to obtain annual flu shots or wear mask during high illness periods. Education: high school diploma or GED required; associate degree and/or certification in medical billing/coding preferred, or equivalent experience. Behavioral, physical, and psychiatric billing experience is preferred.
The ideal candidate has knowledge of behavioral, physical and psychiatric billing, excellent organizational and multitasking skills, strong oral communication and relationship-building skills, critical thinking with emotional intelligence, understanding of 42 CFR confidentiality laws, knowledge of agency policies, professional phone etiquette, and proficiency with email, spreadsheets, EHR systems, accounting software, Microsoft Word and Excel.
