MedStar Health is seeking an experienced Patient Accounts Specialist to join the Patient Accounting team, supporting straight Medicaid claims.
This position requires critical thinking skills along with experience in facility and/or physicians’ claims follow-up and a strong understanding of denial resolution to ensure timely and accurate reimbursement.
The Medicaid team is responsible for completing follow-up on accounts where the patient has straight Medicaid. The team collaborates with other internal MedStar Health departments including advocacy, CFC, and billing to ensure patients who receive retro-eligible Medicaid are billed timely and within specific state requirements.
The role interprets and evaluates appeals including follow-up with payers to assure timely claims resolution and reimbursement. Understanding explanation of benefits and payer methodologies is essential. This role operates in a team environment.
Primary duties include staying current with billing regulations and payer-specific changes, maintaining daily performance benchmarks, completing coding report updates promptly to support daily workflow, and ensuring departmental quality assurance standards within established error rates.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- 1-2 years' experience in patient accounting, accounts receivable, or related healthcare field, or equivalent combination of experience and college education in accounting, finance, or healthcare administration.
- Detailed knowledge and proficiency in at least one specific payer's billing and/or collection process.
- Basic working knowledge of UB04 forms and Explanation of Benefits (EOB).
- Some knowledge of medical terminology and CPT/ICD-9/10 coding.
- Excellent communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Proficient in hospital registration and/or billing systems, Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Ability to type 35 WPM.
