Billing Specialist II or III

Seward Community Health Center is seeking a part-time Billing Specialist II or III for their facility in Seward, Alaska, with a potential remote opportunity for qualified candidates within Alaska. The role involves managing billing activities to ensure timely reimbursement from third-party payors and patients, accurate account documentation, follow-up on aged accounts, and customer service. Additionally, support for front desk and registration functions is required.

The center provides integrated, patient-centered primary care and is a federally qualified health center dedicated to affordable healthcare services.

Key responsibilities range by level from submitting claims, processing payments, negotiating patient payments, resolving denials, ensuring compliance, to training new staff and collaborating on process improvements. Levels II and III involve more complex duties such as analyzing denials, managing appeals, implementing system improvements, and assisting with financial reporting.

The role requires knowledge of Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance billing, and familiarity with billing software and EHR systems. Certification like CBCS or CPB is preferred for higher levels.

The position includes a 3% employer 401(k) match, paid holidays, and accrued leave.

Candidates must pass pre-employment screenings and COVID-19 vaccination is required unless exempted.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree or medical office assistant certification preferred.
  • Experience with medical billing including Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance.
  • Level I: Minimum one year professional billing experience preferred.
  • Level II: Minimum one year professional billing with insurance posting, denial follow-up, and appeals required; CBCS preferred.
  • Level III: CPB or CBCS certification or completion of Medical Billing Specialist Apprenticeship.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Computer proficiency with data entry, Microsoft Office, EHR systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work with minimal supervision.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to quality improvement and organizational values.
  • Must live in or be willing to relocate to Seward, Alaska, or live elsewhere in Alaska for remote option.
  • Pre-employment drug screening, TB test, vaccinations, background and reference checks required.
