Substance Abuse Collections Specialist

Lotus Billing is a specialized revenue cycle management partner serving substance use disorder (SUD) and behavioral health treatment providers. We pride ourselves on aggressive, ethical collections that maximize recovery for our client facilities while maintaining strong payer relationships.

We're looking for a driven Collections Specialist to manage aging accounts receivable for SUD treatment claims. You'll work directly with commercial insurance carriers, negotiate resolutions on outstanding balances, and play a key role in our clients' financial health. Experience in SUD/behavioral health collections is a major plus, but we're open to candidates at all levels who bring tenacity and attention to detail.

Key responsibilities include following up on outstanding insurance claims (commercial, PPO, out-of-network) for detox, residential, PHP, IOP, and OP levels of care; calling insurance carriers (BCBS, Aetna, Cigna, UHC, Humana, etc.) to resolve unpaid, underpaid, and denied claims; working denials and submitting timely, well-documented appeals; negotiating single case agreements (SCAs) and reimbursement when appropriate; identifying trends in payer behavior and escalating systemic issues; maintaining detailed notes in billing system on every account touched; and meeting or exceeding monthly collection goals (bonus tied to performance).

Requirements & Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; associate’s or bachelor’s degree is a plus
  • Experience in medical collections, insurance follow-up, or SUD/behavioral health billing preferred but training is available
  • Familiarity with UB-04 and HCFA-1500 claim forms is a plus
  • Knowledge of EOBs, denial codes, and the appeals process
  • Experience with Availity, CollabMD, KIPU, and Optum Pay is a plus
  • Strong phone presence, professional written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and meet goals
