Responsibilities include complex daily review of hospital and professional charges for clinical trials, ensuring charges are routed with correct modifiers and documentation, managing denials and issues, ensuring compliance with institutional policies and federal guidelines including Medicare Clinical Trial Policy, and collaborating with research and billing teams.
This role requires strong knowledge of healthcare revenue cycle, clinical trial billing requirements, and relevant software systems (MiChart, OnCore).
Work mode may be hybrid or remote at department's discretion. The role supports Michigan Medicine’s mission as a leading health care and research institution.
Associates Degree in Business, Finance, Health Information Management, or related field, or equivalent experience/certifications.
Minimum 3 years experience in healthcare revenue cycle, clinical operations, healthcare billing or compliance, research billing.
Strong knowledge of CMS billing rules, National and Local Coverage Determinations (especially Clinical Trial Policy NCD 310.1).
Familiarity with CPT/HCPCS coding and hospital billing forms (UB-04/1500).
Experience with electronic health record systems.
Preferred qualifications include Bachelor’s Degree, 5+ years professional and hospital billing or reimbursement experience, certifications like ACRP or SoCRA, knowledge of institutional policies and regulatory requirements, familiarity with IRB process, clinical trial protocols, and research compliance systems.
