This position is located in the Health Information Management (HIM) section at the Anchorage VA Medical Center. Medical Records Technicians (Coder) classify medical data from patient health records in hospital and physician-based settings. This is not a remote or virtual position and is physically located in Anchorage, Alaska.
Duties include coding diagnostic and procedural data using ICD, CPT, and HCPCS; abstracting information from electronic health records; ensuring documentation supports assigned codes; consulting with clinical staff to clarify ambiguous information; correcting data errors; and transmitting coded data to national VA databases. The role supports research, epidemiology, outcomes analysis, reimbursement, quality of care, and other health system functions.
Basic Requirements
- United States citizenship
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical coding, and health record structure
- One year of creditable experience or an associate degree in health information technology/health information management or related field with qualifying coursework or completion of an AHIMA-approved or equivalent coding program
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may qualify
- Certification through AHIMA, AAPC, or qualifying CDI certification required for hire/reassignment
- English language proficiency
Grade/Competency Expectations
- Ability to use health information technology and coding software
- Ability to abstract pertinent information from health records
- Knowledge of ICD-CM/PCS, CPT, and coding guidelines
- Ability to apply medical terminology, anatomy/physiology, and disease processes to code outpatient records accurately
- Knowledge of regulatory and documentation requirements
- Ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines
- For higher grades, ability to analyze records, evaluate documentation adequacy, apply HIPAA/privacy regulations, communicate with clinical staff, research coding issues, and correct system errors
