Role Description
The A/R Medical Billing Specialist is a full-time, on-site role responsible for managing accounts receivable activities within an academic neurosurgical practice. The position focuses on reviewing and processing insurance claims, tracking payments, resolving outstanding balances, and supporting timely reimbursement.
Key responsibilities include verifying patient insurance coverage, following up on unpaid or denied claims, preparing appeals, communicating with payers, posting payments, reconciling account discrepancies, and generating reports on accounts receivable status and trends. The role also involves collaborating with clinical and administrative staff to clarify documentation, maintain billing compliance, and support revenue cycle operations.
Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology and the ability to interpret clinical documentation for accurate billing
- Proficiency with denial management, including analyzing denials and implementing corrective actions
- Working knowledge of ICD-10 coding principles and their application in neurosurgical and related specialties
- Experience with commercial insurance plans and payer policies, including claim submission and follow-up
- Familiarity with Medicare regulations and billing requirements for professional services
- Previous experience in medical billing, accounts receivable, or revenue cycle management preferred
- Neurosurgery or specialty practice experience preferred
- Accuracy and attention to detail, with strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with patients, payers, and internal teams
- Comfort using practice management systems and billing software, plus proficiency with basic office applications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Additional coursework or certification in medical billing/coding is beneficial
