Medical Coding Specialist

Mountain View Hospital

Mountain View Hospital is seeking a Medical Coding Specialist to join its Business Office team. This role is responsible for converting diagnoses and treatment procedures into standardized codes for reimbursement and reporting purposes.

The coder assigns ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and/or HCPCS codes and supports APC or DRG group assignment. The position requires accurate sequencing of diagnoses and procedures, review of clinical documentation, and timely abstracting of coded data into the computer system.

Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding guidelines for acute care facilities
  • Current certification as RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCA, or CPC
  • 1+ year of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to use abstracting and coding software, computer systems, and fax machine
  • Ability to read and interpret clinical and administrative documents
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and physicians
  • Basic math skills
  • Ability to follow written, verbal, or diagram-based instructions
  • Ability to solve problems in standardized situations

Responsibilities

  • Review charts thoroughly to identify all diagnoses and procedures
  • Code diagnoses and procedures in accordance with ICD-10 guidelines
  • Use computerized coding and abstracting equipment
  • Contact physicians professionally when diagnosis information is missing
  • Maintain accurate coding and abstraction data
  • Support data quality and reimbursement integrity
  • Serve as a coding resource for hospital staff and assist with coding questions or changes
  • Maintain confidentiality, regulatory compliance, and required coding accuracy
