Health Care Resource Centers is seeking a detail-oriented and conscientious Billing Specialist to support billing operations for a substance abuse treatment organization.
The role focuses on monitoring denials, appeals, and resolutions from insurance carriers, working proactively to collect outstanding balances, and supporting accurate claim processing and patient account updates.
Key responsibilities
- Track incoming claims denials from mail, EOBs, and clinics
- Review denied claims, correct errors, and resubmit claims within 10 days
- Verify whether denials are coordination of benefits (COB) claims and route them appropriately
- Enter claims and COB information for patients with MassHealth as secondary insurance
- Bill patients for patient-responsible amounts when claims are not COB-related
- Update patient insurance information in billing software as needed
- Enter alerts for fiscal clerks regarding patient charges
- Verify insurance eligibility online or by phone as needed
- Run alpha list update spreadsheets and other reports
- Enter authorizations as received
- Maintain confidentiality and follow HIPAA guidelines
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor
Requirements & Qualifications
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Minimum of 3 years of office experience preferred
- Experience with Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance required
- Experience with insurance eligibility verification required
- Computer literacy required, including programs, email, and spreadsheets
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel required
- Strong verbal and written communication skills required
- Typing and data entry skills required
- Working knowledge of health and safety requirements preferred
- Satisfactory drug screen and criminal background check required
