Medical Billing Specialist I/II - Behavioral Health

County of Ventura

Under general supervision at the I level, or direction at the II level, this position is responsible for billing and processing claims to support timely reimbursement and billing compliance with Medi-Cal, Medicare, and general insurance requirements.

The role serves Ventura County Behavioral Health within the Health Care Agency and supports patient financial services for behavioral health billing operations.

Duties include reviewing and analyzing bills, transmitting claims to the appropriate intermediary, following up on denial codes, identifying overpayments and documentation issues, providing information to payors, and preparing bills and claims in a timely manner.

Requirements & Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Medical Billing Specialist I: minimum of 6 months of medical billing experience.
  • Medical Billing Specialist II: 2 years of professional medical billing experience, including billing in Medi-Cal and/or chemotherapy, or 1 year as a Medical Billing Specialist I for the County of Ventura.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Working knowledge of medical reimbursement programs and payment systems.
  • Familiarity with CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS codes.
  • Knowledge of Medi-Cal billing policy, program, and eligibility requirements.
  • Understanding of the Treatment Authorization Request (TAR) process.
  • Experience with managed care, Medicaid/Medi-Cal, Medicare, and commercial insurance billing preferred.
  • Experience using EHR systems such as Cerner, HURON, and/or Claim Source preferred.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate clearly with peers, managers, patients, and payers.
  • Ability to process bills accurately and support prompt reimbursement.
  • Ability to research overcharges, billing issues, and payment methodology.
  • Ability to identify compliance and audit issues and work with compliance staff to resolve regulatory conflicts.

    • Medical Billing Specialist I: $23.00 - $29.16 per hour
    • Medical Billing Specialist II: $26.36 - $33.44 per hour
