Billing Research Specialist

Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00AM-5:00PM with other shifts as needed.

Location: Journal Center.

Hourly position.

Performs billing research functions to ensure requisitions are ready to bill. Determines appropriate billing codes, billing information for data entry of requisitions, and other billing tasks. The role requires a high degree of initiative and self-motivation to troubleshoot billing problems without assistance. Monitors, summarizes, and reports deficiencies in requisition information received from offsite locations and ordering physicians/clients.

Responsibilities include billing research, problem solving, verifying insurance and diagnosis information, resolving discrepancies, entering billing information into systems for scrubber edits, meeting quality assurance and production goals, tracking missing or inaccurate information, preparing billing reports, performing data analysis, communicating with internal and external customers, maintaining confidentiality, handling clerical functions, following department policies, and participating in training.

Requirements & Qualifications

Minimum Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Minimum Experience

Requires one of the following:

  • One year of experience as a Medical Data Entry Specialist in the TriCore Business Office.
  • Minimum of one year laboratory or medical billing experience.
  • Minimum of two years of experience within a healthcare medical office in a registration or clerical position.

Other Requirements

  • Intermediate knowledge and understanding of medical terminology, third-party billing requirements, ICD-10, and CPT coding.
  • Intermediate PC/data entry skills, including Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Must type 30 WPM or 9,000 keystrokes per hour.
