Patient Account Representative - Insurance Claim Follow-Up

Full-time position with 80 hours per pay period on day shift.

Covenant Health is a community-owned integrated healthcare delivery system based in Knoxville, Tennessee. The organization operates 10 hospitals, outpatient and specialty services, and a physician practice division serving patients across East Tennessee.

This role is focused on insurance claim follow-up and patient account resolution. The position starts on-site, with the opportunity to work remotely after training is complete and productivity and quality metrics are consistently met.

Responsibilities

  • Review patient accounts to determine claim status and identify what is needed for final claim processing.
  • Work accounts with full or partial denials to determine root cause and the best resolution path.
  • Learn and apply payer rules as well as state and federal guidelines.
  • Prioritize work according to departmental productivity and quality standards.
  • Communicate with insurance companies, patients, and internal departments to resolve issues that delay claim processing.
  • Assist with collection-related functions for patient accounts.
  • Support compliance, quality improvement, training, and departmental workflow needs.
  • Provide assistance to new employees and participate in meetings and required training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • One to two years of healthcare experience preferred.
  • Computer experience required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, claims submission, and customer service preferred.
  • Must be familiar with insurance plans, requirements, and collection practices, including the Fair Debt Credit and Collection Act.
  • Ability to understand payer requirements and work effectively with patients, co-workers, physicians, and insurance representatives.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to learn and perform adequately within 3 to 6 months on the job.
  • No licensure required.
