Coding Specialist II

This role supports inpatient, observation, and surgical record coding and abstraction for reimbursement, research, and compliance with federal and state regulations.

Requirements & Qualifications

Education and experience

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Associate’s degree in Health Information Management or a related field, or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management or a related field
  • Or one of the following certifications: CCS, CCA, CCS-P, CPC-H, or CPC
  • Minimum of 2 years of acute care facility coding experience
  • Prior experience as an HIS Coding Specialist I or equivalent position

Certifications

  • RHIT
  • RHIA
  • CCS
  • CCS-P
  • CCA
  • CPC-H
  • CPC

Skills and knowledge

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook
  • Familiarity with Meditech, Epic, and Performance Manager/NetLearning preferred
  • Knowledge of ICD, CPT, and HCPCS coding
  • Encoder technology and third-party payer requirements helpful
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English clearly
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Must follow written and verbal instructions
  • Must maintain quality and productivity benchmarks for at least six consecutive months
