Banner Health is seeking an Emergency Medicine Coding Specialist to support emergency department revenue cycle operations in Tucson, Arizona. This role focuses on emergency medicine coding, billing, quality assurance, and provider education to ensure compliant documentation and timely reimbursement.
The position works with MS4, NextGen, RCx, and Cerner in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. The team releases approximately 200 visits per day for billing and offers a hybrid schedule after training: 3 days remote and 2 days in office.
Key responsibilities include:
- Analyzing and improving emergency department coding and billing workflows for facility and professional services
- Reviewing coding hold lists and resolving complex billing issues, missing charges, duplicate charges, and unbillable charts
- Serving as a liaison between providers, coding leadership, and emergency department leadership
- Providing education to faculty physicians, fellows, nurse practitioners, and residents on compliant documentation and coding
- Producing reports on coding queues, reconciliation of visits, and incomplete charts
- Supporting quality assurance, compliance, and revenue cycle operational improvements
Minimum qualifications
- High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge, or an associate degree in a related health care field
- Specialized formal training equivalent to a two-year certification course in medical record keeping principles and practices, anatomy, physiology, pathology, medical terminology, standard nomenclature, and classification of diagnoses and operations
- Strong knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding principles
- At least 3 years of specialized professional coding experience in clinical specialty areas
- Ability to work independently with a high level of accountability and quality performance
- Must pass the employer's coding accuracy test
- Strong critical thinking, organization, and attention to detail
- Proficiency with office software, coding software, and abstracting systems
Preferred qualifications
- RHIA or RHIT credentials
- AAPC medical coding specialty credential in the assigned specialty area
- Specialty coding certification
- Experience in emergency medicine documentation and billing
