Overview
Full-time Billing Specialist for the Laboratory department, working Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm for 80 hours per pay period, with an every-fourth-weekend rotation from 8:00 am to 2:30 pm.
The Billing Specialist prepares bills for services rendered to customers using standardized source documents and procedures. The role maintains customer account records to ensure data accuracy and completeness, and reviews account receivables according to company timetables and procedures to support cash flow and a positive public image for UnityPoint Health.
Responsibilities
- Enter patient demographic information, insurance information, laboratory test codes, and physician office data into the appropriate computer system.
- Maintain assigned customer account information daily using source documents from the laboratory, the laboratory information system, and department receipts.
- Review edit lists and customer account status to ensure documentation needed to support timely payment is complete, available, and on file.
- Prepare assigned billing for self-pay, secondary payer, and third-party payer accounts according to account status, billing schedules, and payer requirements.
- Review collection status reports and customer account information and document appropriate collection efforts.
- Maintain competency regarding secondary and third-party payer coverage, payment practices, and requirements.
- Respond promptly to customer, secondary payer, and third-party payer inquiries and refer unresolved issues to the Billing/Collection Supervisor.
- Review laboratory orders for compliance with National and Local Coverage Determinations (NCD and LCD) policies.
- Assist with disaster response and recovery efforts when assigned.

- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to type accurately at a minimum speed of 40 WPM.

- Medical terminology knowledge.
- CPT and ICD coding experience.
- Previous medical billing or insurance experience preferred.
