Accounting Tech II - Medical Biller

Guilford County

Performs independent technical work supporting the billing and collection of healthcare services for the Health Department. The role reviews encounters for billing accuracy, validates charges and coding, submits claims to Medicare, Medicaid (NCTracks), and commercial payers, resolves claim denials and rejections, posts and reconciles payments, manages accounts receivable, and assists patients with billing inquiries.

This position works with electronic health records, billing systems, payer policies, and revenue cycle processes to support accurate and timely reimbursement while maintaining compliance with federal, state, payer, and HIPAA requirements.

Key duties include:

  • Reviewing encounter documentation for billing completeness
  • Verifying diagnosis, procedure, and modifier coding
  • Submitting electronic and paper claims
  • Posting payments and remittance advices
  • Reconciling accounts and monitoring accounts receivable
  • Researching and resolving denied, rejected, or underpaid claims
  • Communicating with insurance carriers, providers, clinical staff, registration staff, and patients
Requirements & Qualifications

Minimum qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 3 years of experience in bookkeeping or accounting support work

Preferred qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 1+ year of medical billing experience in an EMR/EHR environment in a public health setting

Knowledge and skills

  • Bookkeeping and accounting principles
  • Governmental fund accounting concepts
  • Office procedures and recordkeeping
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Ability to interpret laws, rules, and regulations
  • Ability to verify and process accounting documents accurately
  • Ability to organize records and prepare standard reports
  • Ability to use a calculator and personal computer
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel

  • Must be able to meet or relocate to the two-hour driving radius residency requirement
