The Department of Anesthesiology is seeking a Billing and Coding Assistant to support the oversight and optimization of professional fee coding and compliance activities. Reporting to the Coding Manager, this role independently reviews complex clinical documentation, interprets coding and payer regulations, and ensures accurate, compliant charge capture across multiple service lines.
This position applies coding standards with independent judgment, identifies compliance risks, and partners with providers and leadership to resolve documentation and coding issues that affect regulatory adherence and revenue integrity. The role serves as a subject matter expert and contributes to departmental financial and compliance objectives.
- Review and interpret clinical documentation for accurate, compliant charge capture across pain medicine and related specialties
- Apply ICD-10, CPT, modifier, evaluation and management, procedural, and behavioral health coding knowledge
- Analyze government and commercial payer policies and determine appropriate coding approaches in complex scenarios
- Identify coding trends, discrepancies, and compliance risks and take corrective action
- Guide providers and staff on documentation requirements, coding standards, and regulatory updates
- Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, and clinical staff to improve coding accuracy
- Monitor charge sessions and coding work queues for accuracy, timeliness, and compliance
- Support audits, corrective actions, and process improvement efforts
- Provide cross-coverage for anesthesia services and subspecialty procedures as needed
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience
- Minimum of 4 years of professional coding experience in a healthcare setting, including complex specialty coding
- Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology
- Demonstrated expertise in professional services coding, including evaluation and management coding
- Experience interpreting payer policies and applying regulatory guidance in complex scenarios
- AAPC CPC, CANPC, or equivalent certification preferred
- Epic or similar electronic health record experience preferred
