Coding Specialist - Patient Accounting

Under direct supervision, performs collection functions on account balances within assigned financial classes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with front-desk staff and practice managers to ensure accurate patient registration in the practice management system
  • Review provider documentation for auditing purposes related to billing and communicate with providers when there are errors, missing information, or other inaccuracies
  • Review physician charges, add modifiers, diagnoses, and other standard coding conventions to ensure accurate and timely billing, making corrections as necessary
  • Create and submit clean claims by reviewing and correcting claim errors in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • Stay current on payer billing requirements, CMS, CPT, and AMA regulations
  • Review open encounter, encounter missing charges, and inpatient note reconciliation reports
  • Communicate with patients regarding billing and coding questions
  • Serve as the practice liaison with the Billing Office and help educate staff on efficient and compliant billing and registration practices
  • Work with AR staff to resolve and appeal denials
  • Provide assistance and education to providers regarding correct CPT and ICD-10 coding and documentation requirements
  • Maintain productivity by reviewing a minimum of 12 charge sessions per hour
  • Maintain coding certification through continuing education courses

Requirements & Qualifications

Education

  • Specialized training in coding/abstracting procedures, anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology obtained through seminars and college courses

Experience

  • 1 year of direct billing or collections experience in a healthcare or insurance environment required
  • Completion of a medical billing and coding course required
  • Coding certification required
  • 1 year of CPT and ICD-10 coding experience required

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of collection procedures, laws, rules, and regulations
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to perform arithmetic calculations

Certifications

  • Active AAPC certification required
  • Additional coding certifications applicable to physician practice billing preferred
