Selected by CHRISTUS Health Coding Leadership to apply coding expertise in a team-oriented, service-focused environment. This role mentors, trains, and cross-trains designated Regional Inpatient or Outpatient Coding teams.
The Coding Lead serves as a resource to maintain high-quality ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and/or CPT coding for inpatient and/or outpatient diagnoses and procedures through review of clinical documentation and diagnostic results, with a coding accuracy target of 95% or better. The role ensures data is abstracted into CHRISTUS Health electronic medical record systems, verifies patient dispositions and physician data, follows official coding guidelines, and responds to coding questions using clear written or verbal communication with citations to official references.
The position also helps resolve billing-related error reports, identifies error patterns, supports performance improvement efforts, collaborates with HIM and Clinical Documentation Specialists, and assists leadership with additional departmental needs as assigned.
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent years of experience required
- Completion of an accredited baccalaureate program in Health Informatics or Health Information Management, or an AHIMA-approved Coding Certificate Program preferred
Experience
- 5 years of inpatient and/or outpatient coding experience in an acute care setting preferred
Certifications
- RHIA preferred
- RHIT preferred
- CCS preferred
- CPC preferred
Skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently in a remote setting with little supervision
- Strong understanding of Microsoft Office, EHR systems, encoders, Teams, and related department technology
- Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, DRG assignment, APC assignment, modifier application, and coding audit processes
