Medical Records Technician

Join the Indian Health Service and support essential healthcare operations serving Native communities. This role helps ensure patient records are accurate, organized, and readily available to support timely, high-quality care and community well-being.

Duties include:

  • Scanning, indexing, and filing non-electronic medical and administrative information and forms
  • Maintaining daily logs of documents scanned, filed, and indexed
  • Responding to information requests in a positive and efficient manner
  • Performing qualitative reviews of work performed by yourself and other scanned documents
Requirements & Qualifications
  • U.S. citizenship required
  • Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959
  • May be subject to a probationary period
  • Must comply with IHS immunization policy for healthcare workers, if applicable
  • Must successfully pass E-Verify and a federal background investigation
  • Financial suitability review required
  • Must present two valid forms of identification prior to appointment
  • Work schedule may include 24/7 coverage, holidays, and weekends
  • Physical work may involve prolonged sitting, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, lifting, pushing carts, and climbing stairs or ladders

Qualifications:

  • GS-5:
    • 4 years of education above high school in a related field, or
    • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-4, including medical records review, scanning, indexing, filing, quality control, release-of-information processing, tracking logs, and communication with healthcare staff
  • GS-6:
    • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-5, including managing medical records in an electronic health record system, processing record requests, conducting quality assurance audits, and performing quantitative and qualitative analysis of records
  • There are no education requirements for the position, but education may be used in place of experience where applicable
