Medical Records Technician

Duties

  • Scan, index, and file non-electronic medical and administrative documents.
  • Maintain daily logs of scanned, filed, and indexed documents.
  • Respond to information requests in a positive and efficient manner.
  • Perform qualitative reviews of scanned documents completed by self and others.

Additional Information

  • May require work on a 24/7 schedule, including holidays and weekends.
  • Selectee may be subject to a probationary period.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Federal background investigation and financial suitability review are required.
Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

GS-5

  • 4 years of education above high school related to the position, or
  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-4 performing health information management support functions, including:
    • Reviewing medical records for completeness
    • Preparing, scanning, indexing, and filing medical documentation into EHR systems
    • Conducting quality control checks of scanned records
    • Processing release of information requests in accordance with privacy requirements
    • Maintaining tracking logs and retrieving/archiving records
    • Communicating with healthcare providers and staff to ensure accurate patient records

GS-6

  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-5 performing duties such as:
    • Reviewing, scanning, indexing, and maintaining patient records in an EHR system
    • Processing medical record requests with proper authorization and documentation
    • Conducting quality assurance audits of scanned records
    • Performing quantitative and qualitative analysis to identify missing documentation and obtain corrections

Other Requirements

  • No education requirement beyond what may be used to substitute for experience.
  • Must be able to complete all required background investigation forms promptly.
  • Must comply with vaccination policy if working in an IHS healthcare facility.
