The Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialist (CDIS) performs concurrent and retrospective reviews of inpatient medical records to ensure documentation is accurate, complete, compliant, concise, and consistent. This role supports accurate Severity of Illness (SOI), Risk of Mortality (ROM), Intensity of Services (IOS), compliant coding, reimbursement, quality reporting, and denials prevention.
The specialist works closely with leadership, physicians, nursing, coding, case management, and quality teams, serving as a liaison to improve documentation quality and support provider education. The position is remote, full-time, and requires residence in one of the eligible states listed in the posting.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Health Information Management, healthcare administration, or a related healthcare field preferred
- Associate degree, diploma, allied health education, or equivalent professional credential may be considered with demonstrated CDI, clinical, coding, or HIM experience
- 2–5 years of acute care clinical, inpatient coding, HIM, quality, utilization review/case management, or revenue cycle experience preferred
- Knowledge of inpatient CDI concepts including IPPS, MS-DRGs, CC/MCCs, SOI/ROM, HAC/PSI, and denials prevention preferred
- Strong organizational, communication, clinical reasoning, and documentation integrity skills
- Proficiency with EMR systems, CDI applications, and Microsoft applications
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, multitask across software platforms, and communicate effectively in a fast-paced multidisciplinary environment
- Current unrestricted RN, LPN/LVN, or other applicable clinical license required only if hired under that clinical credential
- RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCDS, CDIP, MD/DO/MBBS, foreign medical graduate, or another qualified healthcare/coding credential may be considered with demonstrated clinical documentation and coding knowledge
- CCDS or CDIP preferred; experienced CDI specialists should obtain certification within 24 months of eligibility or hire unless otherwise approved
