Medical Records Technician

This role focuses on managing medical records and supporting health information workflows in a federal healthcare setting.

Responsibilities include:

  • Scanning, indexing, and filing non-electronic medical and administrative information/forms
  • Maintaining daily logs of documents scanned, filed, and indexed
  • Responding to requests for information in a positive and efficient manner
  • Performing qualitative reviews of scanned documents and work performed by others
Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications may be met through education or specialized experience.

GS-5

  • 4 years of education above high school related to the position, or
  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-4 performing health information management support functions such as:
    • Reviewing medical records for completeness
    • Preparing, scanning, indexing, and filing medical documentation into electronic health record systems
    • Conducting quality control checks of scanned records
    • Processing release of information requests in accordance with privacy requirements
    • Maintaining medical record tracking logs
    • Retrieving and archiving records
    • Communicating with healthcare providers and staff to ensure accurate and complete patient records

GS-6

  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-5 performing tasks such as:
    • Reviewing, scanning, indexing, and maintaining patient medical records in an electronic health record system
    • Processing record requests from patients, providers, attorneys, insurance companies, and government agencies
    • Conducting quality assurance audits of scanned medical records
    • Performing quantitative and qualitative analysis to identify missing documentation and maintain complete patient records

Additional requirements and conditions include:

  • U.S. citizenship required
  • Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959
  • Background investigation required
  • Financial suitability review required
  • May include 24/7, holiday, and weekend schedules
  • Physical work may involve prolonged sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting, and pushing carts
  • REAL ID-compliant identification required prior to appointment
