Medical Records Technician

Duties

  • Scan, index, and file non-electronic medical and administrative information and forms.
  • Maintain daily logs of documents scanned, filed, and indexed.
  • Respond to requests for information in a positive and efficient manner.
  • Perform qualitative reviews of work completed by self and other scanned documents.
  • Support medical records management and health information operations within a healthcare setting.

Additional information

  • A REAL ID will be required beginning May 7, 2025.
  • This position may require work on a 24/7 schedule, including holidays and weekends.
  • Federal employment requirements may include background investigation, financial suitability review, and other clearance-related conditions.
Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

GS-5

  • 4 years of education above high school related to the position, or
  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-4, including:
    • Reviewing medical records for completeness
    • Preparing, scanning, indexing, and filing medical documentation into electronic health record systems
    • Conducting quality control checks of scanned records
    • Processing requests for release of information in accordance with privacy requirements
    • Maintaining medical record tracking logs
    • Retrieving and archiving records
    • Communicating with healthcare providers and staff to ensure accurate and complete patient records

GS-6

  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-5, including:
    • Reviewing, scanning, indexing, and maintaining patient medical records in an electronic health record system
    • Processing medical record requests from patients, providers, attorneys, insurance companies, and government agencies
    • Conducting quality assurance audits of scanned medical records
    • Performing quantitative and qualitative analysis of medical records to identify missing documentation and maintain complete records

  • U.S. Citizenship is required
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959
  • Selectee may be subject to a probationary period
  • Successful completion of a federal background investigation is required
  • Financial suitability review is required
  • Direct deposit is required
  • Position may be covered by a bargaining unit
  • Work may include holidays, weekends, and 24/7 schedules
