Professional Coding and Documentation Improvement Specialist

Capital Health

Facilitates compliant physician coding and documentation to ensure accurate assignment of diagnosis, Evaluation and Management (E&M), and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes. Monitors medical record documentation to ensure industry guidelines, laws, and regulations are met, provides provider feedback and education, and supports documentation improvement initiatives within Capital Health Medical Group. Collaborates with revenue cycle teams, assists with pre-bill edits, and helps resolve coding-related issues and appeals.

Requirements & Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Associate's degree in health information management preferred
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist-Physician-based (CCS-P) required
  • Physician coding and training certification

Experience

  • 2 years of experience in a professional coding role
  • Monitoring and education experience preferred
  • ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and related coding experience

Skills and Knowledge

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of pathophysiology, disease processes, and medical terminology
  • Strong understanding of physician coding, reimbursement, and documentation guidelines
  • Research and analysis skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to work with multiple EMR systems
  • Ability to develop, implement, deliver, and assess coding education plans
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
