HIM Coding Specialist II

Vail Health Hospital

Responsible for accurately assigning and sequencing ICD-10-CM diagnosis, CPT procedural codes, and HCPCS codes for professional inpatient and outpatient records in support of reimbursement and data collection.

This role focuses on professional coding queues and requires strong knowledge of evaluation and management (E/M) leveling, including medical decision making (MDM) and time-based coding. The position involves reviewing patient records, identifying documentation discrepancies, applying appropriate codes, querying clinicians when clarification is needed, and ensuring coding accuracy and timeliness.

The role also includes quality review of scanned documents, collaboration with clinical and revenue cycle teams, participation in meetings and training, and support of department goals and compliance standards.

Requirements & Qualifications

Three years of ProFee coding experience with ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS required.

Required certification: one of the following:

  • RHIT
  • RHIA
  • CPC / CPC-H
  • CCS / CCS-P
  • CIRCC

Must have experience using an encoder such as 3M or TruCode. Must be able to use a computer, keyboard, mouse, and Microsoft Office applications. Must be able to search CMS and payer resources online for coding requirements and medical necessity guidelines. Must have strong English reading, writing, and speaking skills. Preferred education:

  • Graduate of a coding certificate program
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in health information technology or another allied health field
  • Courses in physiology and pharmacology preferred

Additional expectations:

  • Meet department quality and productivity standards within 90 days
  • Ability to maintain coding turnaround expectations
  • Experience with oncology, radiation, or OB/GYN coding preferred
  • Epic experience is a plus
