Certified Professional Coder

Position is remote within the local area.

Ensures all technical aspects of diagnostic and procedure coding are completed in accordance with established standards and in compliance with CMS, NCQA, third-party payors, other regulatory agencies, and Kaiser Permanente policy. This role works charge review queues for reimbursable accounts across internal and external surgical services, serves as a technical coder for all specialties, assists with complex coding questions, and conducts special projects and focused encounter reviews as requested.

The role also researches and assigns HCPCS Level II codes for ambulatory surgical services and/or professional services, reviews high-complexity code edits and transactions, supports coding staff with complex cases, contributes to specialty education materials, and serves as a coding expert on committees as needed.

Requirements & Qualifications

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a healthcare setting with proficiency in medical terminology
  • Minimum 4 years of coding experience
  • Minimum 4 years of customer service experience
  • Minimum 4 years of knowledge in coding practices
  • Minimum 4 years of knowledge of compliance and regulatory requirements

Education

  • Associate's degree in health administration, RHIT certification, or 2 years of experience in a directly related field
  • High school diploma or GED required

Licensure / Certification

  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist - Physician Based (CCS-P)
  • Certified Outpatient Coder (COC)

Additional qualifications

  • Successful completion of Assessment of Critical Coding Skills with a passing score of 80% or higher
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of physician, patient, patient account, and personnel data
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to abstract medical information and determine correct data
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Project management experience preferred
  • Training/education experience preferred
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Strong data management skills, including MS Office proficiency preferred
  • Ability to abstract and assign codes for surgical procedures
  • Ability to work with healthcare professionals at all levels
  • Ability to communicate with physicians and non-physician staff with strong customer service focus
  • Working knowledge of medical specialties, clinical conditions, and procedures performed
