Coding Specialist

OSS Health

The Coding Specialist is a member of the Coding Department within Revenue Cycle Management. This role is responsible for abstracting CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, modifier, and unit information from medical record documentation for pro-fee billing.

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM

Essential duties:

  • Review medical records and assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes based on payer, provider, and location billing requirements.
  • Ensure coding compliance with federal regulations, payer policies, and industry standards.
  • Identify and resolve documentation deficiencies and communicate with providers when clarification is needed.
  • Validate that documentation supports level of service selection.
  • Use coding software, encoders, and other department resources.
  • Stay current on coding updates, payer guidelines, and healthcare regulations.
  • Maintain strict HIPAA compliance and confidentiality.
  • Optimize claims for accurate, maximum reimbursement.
  • Support overall revenue cycle efficiency.
  • Meet department productivity goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements & Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

Qualifications:

  • Active coding certification through AAPC or AHIMA (CPC, CIC, COC, CRC, CPMA, CCS, CCS-P, RHIA, RHIT, CPC-A, etc.)
  • Minimum of 1 year of hands-on medical coding experience
  • Strong working knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong knowledge of MDM leveling and E/M coding guidelines
  • Fluent written and spoken English required
