Summary
Position with the Defense Health Agency (DHA) Atlantic Network at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. The role functions primarily as a medical auditor/trainer within the Directorate of Administration.
Duties
- Analyze patient medical records to identify inaccurately coded services in accordance with federal coding regulations and guidelines.
- Assign codes to medical records, sequencing and determining codes to accurately reflect services and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and third-party insurance requirements using ICD-10-CM and CPT coding books.
- Perform limited utilization review of outpatient and inpatient records to verify diagnoses and length of stay.
- Review secondary diagnoses sequencing to support accurate RVU and DRG allocation.
- Provide coding accuracy and compliance analysis to the Coding Manager and Patient Administration Department Head.
- Prepare reports and recommend staff education and training on accurate coding practices and compliance issues.
- Submit monthly performance and progress reports.
- Maintain knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, disease processes, and surgical techniques through continuing education.
- Maintain knowledge of medical record practices, standards, regulations, and Joint Commission requirements.
- Perform diagnosis and procedure coding using ICD-11-CM and CPT guidelines.
- Develop training programs for medical and ancillary services staff in basic coding techniques and requirements.
- Coordinate with the government electronic health record sustainment trainer and recommend coding resources to improve data quality.
Requirements & Qualifications
Qualifications
- One year of specialized experience including:
- Assisting in auditing coders and/or providers to identify inaccurately coded services in accordance with coding regulations.
- Identifying errors, trends, and concerns regarding diagnosis, CPT, and E/M errors and converting that data into training material.
- Providing guidance and functional knowledge to improve coding accuracy.
- Experience must be paid or unpaid relevant experience; volunteer experience may count.
- Education substitution is not permitted; experience is required.
- Nationally recognized medical coding certification from AHIMA or AAPC is highly desired but not required.
