Under general supervision of the Revenue Cycle Management Director, the Medical Billing Specialist is responsible for processing physician billing for a busy medical practice. This includes maintaining billing software, handling appeals to obtain maximum reimbursement, responding to patient billing requests, and supporting revenue cycle operations.
Key responsibilities include processing denials, claim re-submissions, appeals, and secondary claims; resolving patient account issues; interpreting EOBs to resubmit or appeal denied claims; handling inquiries from patients and insurance companies; reviewing patient account information for accuracy; maintaining billing and AR financial classes; updating document lists; and performing accurate charge entries.
Minimum requirements
- High school diploma or GED required
- Medical Billing Certification from an accredited institution preferred
- Associate degree in business, healthcare administration, accounting, or a related field preferred
Experience and skills
- 2 years of medical billing experience required
- Medical A/R billing experience preferred
- Internet, email, MS Office, and data entry skills required
- Knowledge of medical/surgical terminology
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and multitasking abilities
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to pass state/federal background security check
- Must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
- Must maintain HIPAA compliance and confidentiality
