Position Summary
The Medical Billing & Collections Specialist supports billing, collections, encounter reconciliation, patient account follow-up, and insurance claim resolution within a hospital/medical office setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Answer incoming calls and assist walk-ins
- Review and monitor in-house encounters and work queues
- Follow up on delinquent payment plans and patient balances
- Prepare encounters for audits, refunds, suits, or outside collections as needed
- Research self-pay encounters for insurance coverage and update account information
- Verify employment, probate court records, and estate claims when required
- Review discharged patient information for accuracy and completeness
- Maintain contact terms, correspondence, and filing for patient accounts
- Reconcile encounters, credit balances, EOBs, insurance payments, and allowances
- Monitor reimbursement and contract compliance
- Document all follow-up activities clearly and accurately
- Communicate with physicians, patients, families, insurers, and internal staff
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements & Qualifications
Qualifications
- High school diploma
- 1 year of medical billing and/or collections experience in a medical office setting
- Hospital billing and claim follow-up experience with commercial, UHC, and Medicare Advantage plans preferred
- Comparable education and experience may be substituted
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, follow policies, and work assigned schedules including overtime as required
