CBO Coding Specialist

Henry Ford Health

Under established coding principles and procedures, reviews, analyzes, and validates diagnostic and/or procedural codes submitted by front-end coding and clinical teams for reimbursement and billing purposes.

Abstracts information from the electronic health record to support patient database compilation, medical research projects, patient care evaluation, and administrative decision-making. Ensures coding accuracy, supports provider/patient continuity, and helps optimize reimbursement while maintaining compliance with coding guidelines, third-party reimbursement policies, and accreditation/regulatory standards.

Requirements & Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Some college or additional coursework in Accounting, Business, Healthcare Administration, or Medical Record Sciences preferred

Experience

  • Billing or coding experience preferred
  • Prior experience in a healthcare revenue cycle position preferred
  • Six months of prior coding experience preferred, but not required

Skills and Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, disease processes, medical terminology, pharmacology, and coding systems
  • Proficiency in ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and managers
  • Ability to work independently and remotely
  • Ability to recognize patterns and trends and escalate issues for root-cause analysis
  • Ability to assist other team members

Certifications

  • RHIT certification, RHIT certification eligibility, or CPC, CPC-A, CCS, CCP, or CCA certification required
