The Pharmacy Billing Specialist is responsible for collecting, posting, and managing patient account payments, submitting claims to insurance companies, and following up on claim status.
Key responsibilities
- Prepare and submit clean claims to insurance companies electronically or by paper
- Answer questions from patients, clerical staff, and insurance companies
- Identify and resolve patient billing complaints
- Prepare, review, and send patient statements
- Evaluate patients' financial status and establish budget payment plans
- Track and report the status of delinquent accounts
- Review accounts for possible assignment and make recommendations to the Billing Supervisor
- Prepare information for the collection agency
- Perform collection activities, including contacting patients by phone
- Correct and resubmit claims to third-party payers
- Participate in educational activities and monthly staff meetings
- Maintain strict confidentiality and follow HIPAA guidelines and regulations
Requirements & Qualifications
Qualifications
- 1 year of medical billing and collections experience preferred
- Knowledge of basic medical coding and third-party operating procedures and practices preferred
- Knowledge of business office procedures
- Detail-oriented and accurate
- Ability to use computer software and basic office equipment
- Ability to operate a multi-line telephone system
- Strong phone etiquette and communication skills
- Ability to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, associates, and the public
- Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English required
- Pharmacy Technician Certification required (PTCB or NHA)
- Indiana and Pennsylvania State Pharmacy Technician license required, or willingness to obtain before start date
