Under direct supervision, this role assigns accurate ICD-10 diagnosis codes, CPT-4 procedure codes, and appropriate modifiers from medical record documentation for complex outpatient encounters. The work covers a range of services including Emergency Room, ER E/M charging, OP Trauma, hospital and ASC surgeries, observation, interventional radiology, cardiology, and claim edits. The position supports appropriate reimbursement, research, and compliance with federal and state regulations.
The role serves as a clinical coding subject matter expert, applying critical thinking to moderate to complex outpatient documentation. It is essential for maintaining accurate and timely coding, supporting the billing process, and ensuring compliance with coding guidelines and standards. The position may also provide backup support to PB Outpatient Coding Specialists when needed.
Qualifications
- Associate or bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Experience coding moderate to complex outpatient encounters.
- Ability to use coding and EHR software efficiently, such as EPIC and 3M HDM.
- Knowledge of NCCI edits, NCD/LCD requirements, and payer guidelines.
- Familiarity with AHIMA standards of ethical coding and coding compliance guidelines.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and attention to detail skills.
- Ability to prioritize workload, meet deadlines, and work under pressure.
- Excellent customer service and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Familiarity with basic medical terminology.
- Strong computer skills and typing ability.

- Maintain coding quality accuracy rate of 90%.
