Surgical Coding Specialist

Position Summary

As a Coding Specialist at OAM, you will play a vital role in ensuring timely, accurate coding and documentation of medical procedures and diagnoses related to orthopaedics. Your expertise in CPT and ICD-10 coding systems will be instrumental in maintaining compliance, optimizing revenue cycles, and supporting efficient healthcare operations.

Responsibilities

  • Assign CPT and ICD-10 codes to procedures based on provider documentation and bundling edits such as NCCI and/or AAOS Global Service Data.
  • Code for fracture care and MRI.
  • Verify appropriate insurance information and enter charges into the practice management system.
  • Monitor scheduled and emergent surgeries based on office schedules and charge slips.
  • Reconcile assigned systems to ensure all billable services are accounted for.
  • Abstract and code emergency reports/documentation as assigned.
  • Ensure accuracy of codes and entries by checking relevant dates and services/procedures performed.
  • Verify receipt of necessary facility documents and chart notes in the EMR system.
  • Communicate with providers regarding surgeries, rounds reports, and other procedural activities.
  • Write appeal letters for denied claims.
  • Review charts and provide documentation for requests from other departments.
  • Assist with coding consults and charge entry as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements & Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of orthopaedic surgical coding experience or a professional coding certification.
  • Experience with general orthopedic coding, including sports medicine, arthroscopic, and total joint replacement coding.
  • Experience working with multiple third-party payers, including commercial insurance, auto, and workers' compensation.
  • High school diploma or GED.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate of a medical coding program.
  • Experience working with NextGen.

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Detailed knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology.
  • Strong organization skills.
  • Ability to multitask without compromising accuracy.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and appearance.
  • Microsoft Office and Windows-based applications knowledge.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.
  • Manual dexterity required to operate modern office equipment.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, lifting up to 25 lbs, and reaching may be required.
  • Normal or correctable range of hearing and eyesight.
