Emergency Physicians Professional Association (EPPA), founded in 1969 and owned and governed by its participating physicians, provides expert emergency care across the Twin Cities, St. Cloud, and rural Minnesota. EPPA also operates four Twin Cities Metro Urgency Room locations.
The Coding Specialist is responsible for evaluating patient health records, abstracting key details such as medical history, test results, diagnoses, and treatment recommendations, and applying appropriate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and modifier codes to support billing and research. The role reviews clinical documentation, collaborates with providers to clarify documentation, ensures coding accuracy and productivity standards, assists with audit reviews and compliance monitoring, analyzes coding trends, resolves coding-related billing denials, supports Patient Financial Services, enters charges into practice management systems, and serves as a resource for other coding team members.
The position is in-person at EPPA Headquarters in Bloomington, MN for the first six months of onboarding. After onboarding is completed, the coding team works remotely.
- Completion of an approved Health Information Technology/Coding education program
- Current CCS, CCS-P, RHIT, or CPC/CPC-A certification
- Minimum of 3 years of acute care coding experience preferred
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Strong communication, problem-solving, analytical, and time management skills
- Solid understanding of state and payer-specific regulations and policies related to documentation, coding, and billing
- Familiarity with CMS guidelines, AHIMA ethical coding standards, healthcare reimbursement, and billing practices
- Ability to work accurately and collaboratively in a coding and compliance-focused environment
