Ophthalmology Billing Specialist

We are seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Ophthalmology Billing Specialist to join a healthcare team. In this role, you will manage billing processes specific to ophthalmology services, ensuring accurate and timely reimbursement from insurance providers and patients. You will help streamline financial workflows, improve revenue cycle management, and support exceptional patient care.

The position involves handling ophthalmology billing, claim submission, denial follow-up, insurance verification, and documentation support within an eye care practice.

Requirements & Qualifications

Duties and skills

  • Review ophthalmology clinical documentation to accurately assign CPT, DRG, ICD-9, and ICD-10 codes for procedures and diagnoses
  • Prepare and submit claims using EMR and EHR systems while ensuring compliance with insurance requirements
  • Follow up on unpaid or denied claims through resubmission and appeals
  • Verify patient insurance coverage, benefits, and eligibility prior to billing
  • Maintain detailed medical records and billing documentation in accordance with healthcare regulations
  • Collaborate with office staff to resolve billing discrepancies or coding issues
  • Stay current on changes in medical coding standards, insurance policies, and healthcare regulations affecting ophthalmology billing

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology specific to ophthalmology procedures and diagnoses
  • Proficiency in CPT, ICD-9, ICD-10, DRG classifications, and medical coding best practices
  • Experience with medical billing systems, EMR/EHR platforms, and claim submission processes
  • Ability to interpret medical records accurately for proper coding and billing
  • Excellent communication skills for interacting with insurance companies, patients, and healthcare providers
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills to manage multiple claims simultaneously
  • Knowledge of healthcare regulations related to medical records management and privacy standards
  • Ophthalmology billing experience: 1 year required
