Duties and skills
- Review ophthalmology clinical documentation to accurately assign CPT, DRG, ICD-9, and ICD-10 codes for procedures and diagnoses
- Prepare and submit claims using EMR and EHR systems while ensuring compliance with insurance requirements
- Follow up on unpaid or denied claims through resubmission and appeals
- Verify patient insurance coverage, benefits, and eligibility prior to billing
- Maintain detailed medical records and billing documentation in accordance with healthcare regulations
- Collaborate with office staff to resolve billing discrepancies or coding issues
- Stay current on changes in medical coding standards, insurance policies, and healthcare regulations affecting ophthalmology billing
Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology specific to ophthalmology procedures and diagnoses
- Proficiency in CPT, ICD-9, ICD-10, DRG classifications, and medical coding best practices
- Experience with medical billing systems, EMR/EHR platforms, and claim submission processes
- Ability to interpret medical records accurately for proper coding and billing
- Excellent communication skills for interacting with insurance companies, patients, and healthcare providers
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills to manage multiple claims simultaneously
- Knowledge of healthcare regulations related to medical records management and privacy standards
- Ophthalmology billing experience: 1 year required
